How are funeral costs calculated?

Transport, supplies, cemetery work and the ceremony are costed separately. Never pay without a written estimate — you should know what each line covers.

A funeral cost is not a single figure — it is the sum of several independent items. Seeing them separately lets a family both manage the budget and avoid paying for things it does not need.

The individual cost items

  • Collection and transport of the deceased — depends on distance and time of day.
  • Ritual washing and shrouding — a fixed rate.
  • Supplies — shroud, coffin, wreaths; this is where the price range is widest.
  • Cemetery — plot allocation, digging, formalities. A new plot versus an existing family plot makes a large difference.
  • The ceremony — marquee, seating, sound system, religious officiant.
  • Commemoration meals — third day, seventh day and anniversary; varies with the number of guests.

What changes the price most?

In practice, three factors: the location of the cemetery (within Baku and in the regions the difference can be several-fold), the level of the supplies chosen, and the transport distance. For repatriation the dominant cost is air freight, which is charged by weight and varies sharply with the route.

Why a written estimate matters

A verbal agreement is the single biggest source of dispute in this field. Ask for a line-by-line written estimate before any work begins. A reputable service will not hesitate to provide one. The estimate should also flag, separately, anything that may still change — a cemetery tariff, for instance.
